The Most Common Types of Plastic Surgery for Men
It’s no secret that men have their fair share of body image issues just as much as women do.
Whether it’s a concern about developing male breasts, feeling overweight, looking older, or even penis size, lots of men worry about whether or not they’re “good enough” to attract a mate or even to meet society’s expectations of male beauty.
Perhaps that’s why plastic surgery for men has continually become more and more popular over the past few years with both invasice and non-invasive procedures.
Are you considering cosmetic surgery for men?
If so, then perhaps you’re curious about some of the most popular procedures.
This post is here to help.
Read on to learn more about the most in-demand male cosmetic surgeries, and then learn where you can go to get the kind of care and results you deserve.
1. Gynecomastia Surgery
When it comes to male cosmetic surgery, procedures that help to treat gynecomastia — the development of male breasts — are perhaps the most popular.
It might come as a surprise, but if you’re struggling with a sudden enlargement of your breast tissue, you’re not alone. In fact, anywhere between 40-50% of men will face gynecomastia at some point in their lives.
You may develop gynecomastia in one breast, or both of them. You may feel insecure about taking your shirt off, going swimming, or even being intimate with your partner.
Luckily, if this is something you’re insecure about, there are surgical options.
First, the surgeon will take a look at the specific tissue abnormalities that have caused male breasts to develop. There may be an issue with your fat deposits, the skin of the breasts, or even glandular overgrowth.
In some cases, liposuction alone may be enough to fix the shape of your chest, but often, a glandular excision is needed.
First, anesthesia is given and the surgical site is tumesced with fluid to both anesthetize the chest and reduce bleeding. The procedure may be perfromed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, where one is asleep. The choice between local or general will depend on factors such as the magnitude of the surgery and the desires of the patient.
Then, small incisions are made for liposuction, and fat is aspirated. Often, Dr. Neavin will use the Vaser is used to help melt fat and breast tissue while also aiding in skin tightening. Vaser stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound, Energy, and Resonance. It is a safe device that sometimes offers benefits over traditional liposuction for gynecomastia surgery.
Then, if needed, glandular tissue is removed through a well camouflaged incision along the border of the areola. Often, a drain is inserted to remove fluids and keep down your swelling and reduce the risk of potential infection.
You will also likely need to wear a compression vest for about four weeks after your surgery, to be removed only when showering. (Don’t worry — it’s easy for patients to hide the vest underneath their clothing.)
Drains are removed in the office within 3 to 5 days in most cases. Drain removal is not painful.
2. Facial Fat Transfer
Have you always wanted to have a stronger jawline, better cheekbones, or a more attractive chin?
If so, then you’ll understand why facial remodeling with the use of fat or fillers is one of the most in-demand men’s plastic surgery procedures.
Fat transfer/fat grafting is especially popular because it removed unwanted fat from one area of your body and “repurposes” it in another. If you decide to have liposuction in your love handles, for example, the fat removed can be used to create facial contours.
Plus, depending on where the fat is injected and the type of fat, it can also be used to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. For instance, micronized fat (nano fat) is liquefied fat rich in stem cells. Micronized fat transfer into the skin can improve skin tone, texture, and color. Macro fat, the kind of fat often used in transfer to the buttock (BBL), breasts, and face, can create more harmony and symmetry within the face by filling areas sunken with age or by augmenting areas such as the cheek bones, temples, and jawline.
Other patients may prefer to use injectable fillers to reshape their faces. While things like Botox® can help to relax your facial muscles to get rid of fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet, fillers create more volume in the face. Volume in the face is often the critical missing component that generates an aged appearance. Wrinkles come in a distant second place.
Fillers and fat transfers in the face are excellent alternatives to more extensive cosmetic surgery procedures like facelifts.
3. Liposuction
No matter how hard you hit the gym, if you’re like most people, there are some areas on your body that just don’t seem to improve.
And while liposuction won’t magically cause you to lose 40 pounds and get the perfect body in a single day, it can help you to finally tackle those problem areas. It can create the illusion that one may have shed a significant amount of weight becasue the procedure is targeted to very specific regions that have become stubborn.
For men, liposuction in the back, the flanks, the abdomen, and even under the chin and neck are especially popular areas to target. In the abdomen, etching may be performed to highlight the six pack muscles. This modification of liposuction is generally referred to high definition liposuction, or six-pack liposuction. The goal is to create natural results be focusing on the natural contour of the underlying abdominal muscles. Not every man is a good candidate for high definition liposuction. Dr. Neavin will assess your body and dtermine to what extent etching can be performed while still generating very natural looking results.
Liposuction may be performed under general or local anesthesia depending on several factors such as magnitude of the surgery, the area of the sugery, whether or not Vaser is used, and the desires of the patient. After surgery, you’ll need to wear a binder after the procedure to make sure that swelling is kept to a minimum.
While there are lots of different liposuction techniques, in many cases, the classic tumescent lipo is still the best fit for men. Again, vaser is often helpful in men who have had prior liposuction or are having gynecomastia surgery since it aids in the emulsification of fat, scar tissue, and breast tussue.
Speak to your surgeon during your consultation to determine the best kind of liposuction for your needs.
4. Penis Enlargement
Nearly one out of every five men say that they’re insecure and worried about their penis size.
Perhaps that’s why one of the most popular male cosmetic procedures is penis enlargement. But how exactly does it work?
The two most popular options are superconcentrated thrombocyte injections for men (the STIM™ shot) and fat injections with PRP (STIF™.) developed by Dr. Neavin
In STIM™ therapy, platelet-rich plasma from your own body is injected into the penis. PRP is commonly used in cardiovascular treatments, orthopedic care, and even in wound healing. So, you can be certain that it’s safe.
You’ll receive local anesthesia, and then the penis is injected into 6 points of the penis. Directly after these injections, a penis pump is applied to the area to increase negative pressure. The negative pressure results in micro injury to the tissues within the penis, priming the area for platelt rich plasma and its wonderful healing molecules. With the penis primed, the PRP may now act on the tissue to distribute its healing cytolines and growth factors.
The goal of PRP therapy is to help men experience an enhanced sensation during intercourse, help them to get and maintain an erection, and promote new tissue growth, potentially leading to an increase in both penile length and circumference.
STIF™ therapy also uses PRP, but with the addition of an autologous fat transfer.
Usually, Dr. Neavin will take fat from your abdomen or lower back, filter it, and inject the fat into your penis. While PRP injections are used in addition to the fat transfer, the penis pump is not. In general, you’ll need only one STIF™ treatment to achieve your desired results.
If you’re looking for a more drastic change in your size, we suggest that you give STIF™ therapy a try.
5. Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, more commonly referred to as a “nose job” is still one of the most-requested procedures when it comes to plastic surgery for men.
The goal here is less to “fix” the nose you have now, and more so to ensure that the size and shape of your nose is a good fit with the rest of your face.
The right rhinoplasty can create a much better facial symmetry and balance, and will be in better proportion with your chin, lips, and even your ears.
The bump on your nose, the nasal column that breaks up the nostrils, and even the tip and projection of your nose are all things that will be taken into consideration during a rhinoplasty. However, the goals are somewhat different in a man than woman. In a man, the slope is less drastic. And in fact, a small bump is often preferred. A great example of a beautiful nose with a masculine bump can be found in Dave Gandy, the Dolce Gabanna model.
In addition, chin implants are often combined with rhinoplasty to improve facial balance in men.
6. Hair Restoration
For many men, baldness, a receding hairline, and thinning hair, in general, are among their greatest cosmetic concerns.
This is especially difficult for younger men — and since about 1/4 of men will deal with some kind of hair loss before they even turn 21, fixing the issue as soon as possible is paramount.
So, it likely won’t come as much of a surprise that hair restoration and hair transplants are among the most popular cosmetic procedures for men.
The goal of a good hair restoration procedure is to minimize scarring and to make the results look as natural as possible. FUE transplants (follicular unit extraction) are an especially excellent way to make that happen. Dr. Neavin uses NeoGraft to minimize scarring and downtime, which avoids the linear scar seen with older, “strip methods” that most doctors still do today.
With NeoGraft, follicles are taken from the part of your scalp that still has lots of hair on it, and then placed in areas that need more attention. The results are permanent, and often only one session is needed to sufficiently restore hair.
