Neck Lift

Youthful profiles have a sharp angle in the neck with a defined jawline. As we age, fat accumulates in the neck, the skin sags, and the muscles under the skin loosen.

Perhaps you have a double-chin, gobble neck, turkey neck, or turkey wobble. This is when a neck lift is indicated.

A neck lift is a very powerful procedure to rejuvenate both men and women. Neck lifts are usually combined with a facelift to avoid a patchwork-like look, or the done appearance. However, neck lifts in appropriate candidates can also be performed in isolation. Profiles of male and female patients can be dramatically improved with a neck lift.

Neck Liposuction

Liposuction of the neck, often mistakenly referred to as chin liposuction, is an effective way to restore a tighter neck and more defined jaw line. It is the procedure of choice in men and women who have excess fat and relatively good skin elasticity of the neck.

Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia in the office through one to three small incisions, hidden in the submental crease and behind the earlobe. The operation may take up to forty-five minutes.

Platysmaplasty

In men and women who have loose platysma muscles, liposuction alone will not be enough to tighten the neck or jawline. A platysmaplasty is indicated for those who have developed separation of the platysma from the midline. This procedure requires a small incision under the chin to allow access to the platysma which runs vertically from the chin to the clavicles and below. The muscles are tightened with stitches like a corset, and sometimes cut to improve the angle. Fat is usually liposuctioned, excised directly, or using a combination of both liposuction and direct excision.

Platysmaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia in the office through a 2 cm submental crease incision. The operation may take up to one-and-a-half hours to complete.

Neck Lift with Skin Excision

When skin is loose, often liposuction and a platysmaplasty will be inadequate to properly improve the neck and jawline. Skin excision in these cases may be necessary, in addition to muscle tightening and possibly fat excision. The neck skin can be tightened behind the ear and excised often in combination with a facelift incision that runs in the natural creases in front of the ear.

A neck lift with skin excision can be performed under local anesthesia in the office. The operation may take up to three hours.

Recovery involves wearing a bandage under the chin for a week. There are virtually no visible incisions – just a small one under the chin and one in the crease of the earlobe behind the ear.

More on Neck Lift

A neck lift is often performed in conjunction with a chin implant. The chin implant can help suspend the neck and improve the cervicomental angle. Perhaps one of the most powerful combinations to improve a profile includes a neck lift in conjunction with rhinoplasty and chin augmentation. For men, a neck lift and chin implant can impart a very powerful, masculine look.

When a neck lift requires muscle tightening, a small incision is made under the chin, or submental crease. From here, unwanted fat can be removed and the muscles such as the platysma can be tightened with permanent stitches. When the neck lift is combined with a facelift, excess skin can be pulled and trimmed. However, much of the power of the neck lift is the sculpting that occurs under the skin through fat excision and muscle tightening. A neck lift involving the plication of the platysma is analogous to a tummy tuck.
