The Good, the bad, the Saggy

The Good, the Bad, the Saggy

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes.  The characteristics of beautiful breasts are subjective.  Size is often not the biggest factor.  Even in Beverly Hills, bigger isn’t always better.  Small and perky wins over big and droopy almost every time.  In fact, the request of, “Make them perky, doc” is heard just as frequent as, “Make them bigger”.  Moreover, there are far more requests to make breasts smaller than to make them saggy.  The requests to make breasts saggy remains steady at zero.

While he ideal size of breasts is debatable, there are some universal traits that define ideal breasts.  These are:

Symmetry

It is probably of no surprise that breasts that look the same in shape and size are considered most attractive. It may also be no surprise that no two breasts are identical.

Areola Size

The areola is the dark skin around the nipple. Ideal circumference of the areola is less than 42 mm. The areola enlarge with age and pregnancy.  Young areola tend to be much smaller than 42 mm. With many breast lift surgeries the areola are reduced.

Distance of the nipple from the upper sternum

Ideally, the distance from the nipple to the notch on the upper breast bone is 19 to 21 cm.  How was this number derived? A study, of course, by a Dr. Jack Penn.  In the study he asks medical students to identify “perfect breasts” from subjects, then take measurements.  Science.  As breasts sag with age, this number gets bigger.

Distance of the nipple to the breast fold

Ideally, the distance between the nipple and the breast fold is 6.7 cm.  This distance lengthens with sagging.

Direction of the nipple position

The nipple with the woman standing should point straight out to slightly up.  When the nipple points down, this is evidence of sagging, called ptosis. For more on breast ptosis, click here.

Below is a breast augmentation performed by Dr. Tim Neavin.  The breasts here fit many, if not all, of the ideal characteristics.
