This article will describe the changes in the body from pregnancy and the surgeries that exist to improve these changes, often referred to as, “mommy makeover“.
Changes that occur after pregnancy include loosening of the muscles of the abdominal wall called rectus diastasis, and this often coexists with loose skin. Unfortunately, many of these changes after pregnancy do not return to their prior state. Even with diet and exercise, one cannot reshape the body as it once were before pregnancy.
The good news is there are surgical options to restore or even improve one’s figure. When we talk about mommy makeover, we generally refer to areas such as the breast and tummy. With the lactation, the breasts engorge with milk and the skin stretches. Often, the tissues don’t tighten after lactation, resulting in saggy breasts. The breasts may also look deflated since there is more skin in relation to volume. Breasts after pregnancy can be “inflated” with an implant to fill-out the skin discrepancy and restore perkiness. Or, in cases where the skin has sagged too much, called breast ptosis, skin excision is required to improve the breast appearance. This type of surgery is called breast lift or mastopexy and can be combined with a breast implant to improve volume.
Now onto the belly…
Pregnancy stretches out the muscles of the abdominal wall leading to a separation at the midline. Crunches or sit ups will not result in muscle tightening at the midline. In short, exercise doesn’t fix rectus diastasis. What results from the loosening of the muscles is a “pudge” or protrusion of the belly. Sometimes, this is also associated with loose skin. A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty will accomplish two things:
1) tighten the muscles and,
2) remove the excess skin.
Often, tummy tucks are combined with liposuction of the hips and lower back to generate an hourglass figure. When the fat is removed from liposuction, it can be transferred into the face to restore youth and beauty or into the buttock to create a perkier but. This is often referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift or Brazilian Butt Augmentation.
