It is very rare for any health insurance to cover cosmetic procedures. In most cases, procedures that are for cosmetic purposes are not covered by health insurance. However, in some cases that a patient has undergone a mastectomy (removal of the entire breast) health insurance agencies may cover the procedure. It is important to check with your health insurance provider if this is your case.

Breast Implant Types

There are two types of implants that a patient can choose from: saline implants or silicone implants. Each one of these implants has its share of pros and cons. Ultimately, the choice of which implant is best is a personal one. Many factors including the look, feel, cost and risk will go into choosing the type of implant for your procedure.

Silicone Breast implants

Silicone implants are filled with a thick silicone gel that will resemble fat. This material will allow the implant to match the shape of the breast to provide a natural look and texture. They come in several sizes and shapes and are available in either round or teardrops.

A concern that patients will have with silicone implants is in the event that they rupture. If a silicone implant ruptures, the silicone material cannot be absorbed by the body. Thus, the implant will have to be removed immediately.

Most women will choose silicone implants due to the more natural look and feel compared to other implants. They are less likely to ripple or wrinkle. Silicone implants will cost more but will provide you with a better result.

Saline Breast implants

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution that adds fullness. Most women do not prefer saline implants, but they still are an option for those who want them. It’s important to understand that saline  implants do not offer as natural of a look as other breast implants that are available. Dr. Neavin will explain all options during your consultation; however, he recommends Silicone (or Gummy Bear) implants if you desire a more natural aesthetic.

Gummy-Bear Breast implants

Gummy bear implants are a type of silicone implant. The silicone gel is a little bit more cohesive and thicker than normal silicone implants. They have a teardrop shape that mimics the natural shape of the breast. They are less likely to leak or rupture than traditional silicone implants..

One disadvantage is that they require a larger incision which means patients will have a larger scar. They are also more expensive than traditional silicone implants.

Understanding where Implants can be placed

Subglandular Placement

The implant is placed in the pocket between the natural breast tissue and chest muscle. This option provides a natural look and feel, especially for women who have a good amount of natural breast tissue

Subpectoral Placement

The implant is placed beneath the pectoral muscle, located between the tissue and chest wall.. This option is good for women that have thinner natural tissue.

Submuscular Placement

The implant is placed beneath the chest muscle (pectoralis major muscle). It provides a natural-looking result, reduces the risk of capsular contracture and implant rippling. However, this has the longest recovery time

Surgical Incision Options

Inframammary

This incision is made in the crease located directly under the breast where it meets the chest well. The scar is usually concealed and provides access for the surgeon to create the implant pocket.

Transumbilical: Also known as "TUBA"

This is done at the belly button and the implant is inserted through a tunnel created beneath the skin and muscle. This option is only suitable for saline implants.

Periareolar

The incision is made at the edge of areola, near the pigmented area that surrounds the nipple. This also creates a concealed scar as it blends well with the pigment of the skin.

Transaxillary

Preferred by patients who do not want any visible scar. However, it is done through the armpit and is not recommended.

Recovery

Patients should get plenty of rest post-surgery to ensure proper healing. Recovery time after surgery usually takes 1-2 weeks before you can return to work. During this time, you should avoid any strenuous activity or heavy lifting. Patients can return to normal activities can usually after 4-6 weeks.

During your recovery, a surgical garment (surgical bra) should be work at all times to reduce swelling and improve blood flow to the area. This will aid in recovering quicker.

Risks and Complications for Breast augmentation Patients

When it comes down to it. a breast augmentation is a surgical procedure and just like all other plastic surgery procedures there are risks and potential complications that patients should be made aware of. Common risks include infection and scarring. Dr. Neavin will go over these in detail during your consultation and he will also provide the best protocol to make sure these are avoided.

One complication that surgeons try to avoid at all costs is capsular contractor. This is when the body’s response to a foreign object, in this case an implant causes scar tissue to form around the breast implant. This will cause the skin around the implant to tighten and compress against the implant. Thus, this will lead the implant to harden distort the shape as well as cause pain. The only way to fix this would be to have revision surgery. Now of course there are different grades of capsular contractor and minor cases can be monitored and treated. However severe cases will require surgical intervention.

Capsular contracture is said to occur in about 15% of breast augmentation procedures. To this day, the cause of capsular contracture is not fully understood, but it’s stated to be related to a combination of factors including bacterial contamination, bleeding, and the surface texture of the implant.

There are different grades of capsular contracture on a scale from Grade 1 to Grade 4. The mild cases only require to keep observation of the issue, so it will not require any additional surgery to remove the scar tissue or replace the implant as with higher grades.

To reduce the risk of capsular contracture, Dr. Neavin will take specific steps during the procedure, such as placing the implant under the muscle. One of the best ways to also reduce risk is to simply be meticulous about following post-operative instructions and attend all follow-up appointments. with their surgeon.

While capsular contracture is a risk, with proper management and treatment, most cases can be effectively addressed and treated.
