Body Contouring

Liposuction
Precision Body Sculpting for Stubborn Fat

Liposuction precisely removes unwanted fat to contour and reshape your body. Whether targeting the abdomen, flanks, back, thighs, or neck, this procedure eliminates stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. Dr. Neavin uses the gold-standard tumescent technique to achieve smooth, natural-looking results with minimal downtime. The harvested fat can even be repurposed for facial rejuvenation or buttock enhancement through fat grafting.
Duration 1-3 Hours
Anesthesia Local, Sedation, or General
Downtime 3-7 Days
Results Permanent

Why Patients Choose Liposuction

Permanent Fat Removal

Fat cells removed during liposuction are gone for good. As long as you maintain a stable weight, your improved contours are lasting.

Targeted Precision

Unlike weight loss, which reduces fat uniformly, liposuction allows Dr. Neavin to sculpt specific problem areas for a proportionate, balanced physique.

Minimal Downtime

Most patients return to desk work within a few days. The tumescent technique reduces bleeding, bruising, and post-operative discomfort.

Versatile Fat Utilization

Harvested fat can be transferred to the face, breasts, or buttocks—turning a subtraction into an addition where you want more volume.

Expected Results

Even with initial swelling, improved contour is often visible the day after surgery. As swelling subsides over weeks to months, your final sculpted results emerge. Results are permanent as long as you maintain a stable weight.

Refined Body Contours

Stubborn fat deposits that obscured your natural shape are eliminated, revealing the toned physique underneath.

Improved Proportions

By selectively reducing specific areas, liposuction creates better balance between your upper and lower body.

Enhanced Muscle Definition

For appropriate candidates, high-definition liposuction (etching) can create the appearance of a more athletic, sculpted abdomen.

Technical Specifications

Liposuction Techniques Explained

You may have heard of laser-assisted lipo, Vaser liposuction, SmartLipo, and SlimLipo. While these are heavily marketed, the traditional tumescent liposuction method remains the gold standard for fat removal.

01

Tumescent Liposuction (Gold Standard)

The fat is infiltrated with a solution containing local anesthesia (lidocaine), epinephrine (adrenaline), and IV fluid. This solution anesthetizes the area, constricts small blood vessels, and allows for greater fat removal with less bleeding and excellent pain control. Whether performed under general anesthesia, local with sedation, or straight local, the technique remains the same.

02

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

Uses a mechanical handpiece that supplements the surgeon’s motions. This can be particularly useful in fibrous areas or for larger volume cases, but the fundamental technique remains tumescent-based.

03

Laser-Assisted Liposuction (SmartLipo)

Marketed heavily but limited to small volume cases and often requires multiple sessions. Not Dr. Neavin’s preferred approach for most patients.

04

High-Definition Liposuction (Etching)

Fat is aggressively removed along the lines of the “six-pack” to create the appearance of a more toned abdomen. This powerful technique must be applied with caution in men with too much abdominal fat, etching can produce short-lived results followed by an unnatural appearance. Proper candidate selection is critical. Ab etching for women, however, produces a very powerful result.

Patient Profile

Candidates

Ideal Candidates

You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you:

  • Are at or near your ideal body weight with localized fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise
  • Have good skin elasticity that will contract after fat removal
  • Are in good overall health without conditions that impair healing
  • Have realistic expectations about body contouring (not weight loss)
  • Are a non-smoker or willing to quit before and after surgery
  • Can commit to wearing compression garments during recovery

Not Ideal Candidates

Liposuction may not be right for you if you:

  • Are significantly overweight and seeking a weight loss solution
  • Have poor skin elasticity or significant loose skin (may require skin excision procedures)
  • Cannot accept the possibility of touch-up procedures to refine results
  • Smoke and are unwilling to quit
  • Have unrealistic expectations about what contouring can achieve
  • Have medical conditions that increase surgical risks
Estimated Investment
$5,000 - $15,000+
The cost of liposuction varies based on the number of areas treated, volume of fat removed, anesthesia type, and whether fat transfer is included. During your consultation, you'll receive a detailed quote tailored to your treatment plan. Financing options are available. Remember: liposuction is an investment in permanent body contouring—the removed fat cells don't return.

Treatment Areas

01

Common Liposuction Areas

Liposuction is most commonly performed on the abdomen, flanks (love handles), lower back, thighs (inner and outer), arms, under the chin/neck, male chest (gynecomastia), knees, and bra roll areas. Multiple areas can often be treated in a single session.

Surgery Day Journey

Arrival & Preparation

Arrive at our accredited surgical facility. Areas of concern are marked pre-operatively while standing. You'll change into a surgical gown and meet with Dr. Neavin and the anesthesia team.

Anesthesia & Tumescent Infiltration

Whether under general anesthesia, sedation, or local, the tumescent solution is infiltrated into the treatment areas. This numbs the region and prepares the fat for removal.

Fat Removal

Through small 1cm incisions, cannulas are inserted and fat is precisely removed. Dr. Neavin uses crossing paths to ensure uniform thickness and smooth contours. Fat may be collected for transfer if planned.

Comprehensive
Aftercare Support

Your recovery experience is supported by Dr. Neavin's team with detailed instructions and availability for any questions or concerns.

Compression Garments

Properly fitted compression garments are essential. They reduce swelling, improve contour uniformity, and support healing. Wear them continuously (except when bathing) for 4 weeks.

Activity Guidelines

Walk the evening of surgery and continue light walking daily. Avoid strenuous activity for at least 3 weeks. Gradually increase activity as cleared by Dr. Neavin.

Follow-Up Appointments

Return for suture removal at 7-8 days. Additional follow-ups monitor your healing progression. Contact our office immediately if you experience unusual pain, fever, or concerning symptoms.

Healing Timeline

Every patient heals differently, but this timeline offers a general guide for your return to daily life.

Days 1-3: Initial Recovery

Expect soreness similar to an intense workout. Pain is well-managed with oral medications. Walk the evening of surgery to promote circulation. Compression garments are worn continuously.

Days 4-7: Returning to Normal

Most patients return to desk work. Swelling and bruising are present but improving. Continue wearing compression garments. Sutures may be removed around day 7-8.

Weeks 2-4: Progressive Healing

Gradually resume light activities. Compression garments worn for a total of 4 weeks. Swelling continues to decrease. Avoid strenuous exercise until cleared by Dr. Neavin.

Months 1-6: Final Results

Resume all normal activities including exercise. Swelling fully resolves, revealing your final contours. For submental (neck) liposuction, a chin strap is worn for approximately one week.

Safety &
Potential Risks

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon using proper techniques and in an accredited surgical facility, it has an excellent safety profile. The tumescent technique specifically has reduced risks compared to older methods.

Touch-ups are performed in the office under local anesthesia and are generally not necessary. However, Dr. Neavin’s goal is not only proper contouring but your complete satisfaction. Such touch-ups are quick, provide little to no downtime, and often put the finishing touch on your body contouring results.

Important Considerations

As with any surgical procedure, liposuction carries potential risks including:

  • Contour irregularities or asymmetry
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Temporary numbness or nerve irritation
  • Infection
  • Skin discoloration
  • Loose skin (in patients with poor elasticity)
  • Need for revision or touch-up procedures

Frequently Asked Questions

Is liposuction a weight loss procedure?
No. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss solution. It's designed to remove stubborn localized fat deposits that don't respond to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates are at or near their goal weight.
Will the fat come back after liposuction?
Fat cells removed during liposuction are permanently gone. However, remaining fat cells can still enlarge if you gain significant weight. Maintaining a stable weight preserves your results long-term.
Can liposuction tighten loose skin?
Liposuction removes fat, not skin. In patients with good skin elasticity, the skin will contract around the new contour. In patients with poor elasticity or significant loose skin, a skin excision procedure (such as a tummy tuck or body lift) may be needed.
How much fat can be removed safely?
Safe fat removal limits depend on the technique and whether you're going home the same day. The tumescent technique allows for safe outpatient removal. Dr. Neavin will determine appropriate volumes based on your individual case.
What's the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck?
Liposuction removes fat; a tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens abdominal muscles. Many patients benefit from combining both procedures. If you have significant loose skin or muscle separation, liposuction alone won't address those concerns.

Artistry Meets
Surgical Precision

When it comes to body contouring, technique and patient selection are the major determinants of successful results. There is no substitute for experience and skill.

Dr. Neavin evaluates each area of concern for tissue properties that will yield great results, good results, or more limited improvement. Much of your aesthetic potential resides in skin elasticity, affected by diet, age, smoking, weight fluctuations, and genetics. Rather than making promises that can’t be kept, Dr. Neavin discusses the possibilities and limitations so that expectations can be set and ultimately met.

Unlike surgeons who chase marketing trends with laser-assisted devices and proprietary techniques, Dr. Neavin relies on the traditional tumescent method—the gold standard for fat removal. Regardless of the device used, it is the surgeon’s technique that determines outcomes.Fat harvested during liposuction doesn’t have to go to waste. Dr. Neavin often uses this precious resource for fat grafting to the face (restoring youthful volume) or the buttocks (Brazilian Butt Lift) for patients who desire enhanced projection.
